Monsters vs Aliens - Graphic Novel Review and Book Giveaway

"This wasn't the way Susan Murphy thought she'd be spending her honeymoon: being attacked by a killer robot from beyond the stars. ... She's Ginormica -- and she's in trouble!" - Monsters Vs. Aliens: The Official Movie Adaptation by Andy Lanning
I don't know about you, but during the Superbowl halftime a couple months ago we donned on our 3-D glasses and watched the trailer for the upcoming movie, Monsters vs. Aliens. Since then we've been waiting for the release of the DreamWorks animated film. Tomorrow March 27, 2009, the movie opens in theaters everywhere.

As a tie-in to the movie, Titan Books just issued a couple of fantastic Monsters vs. Aliens graphic novels and gave us a sneak peak. For those not familiar with graphic novels, they are comic books taken to a new level. Kids LOVE graphic novels and so do adults. Graphic novels draw the reader into the story with sequential illustrations and corresponding text making them an especially good choice for reluctant readers.

Monsters Vs. Aliens: The Official Movie Adaptation by Andy Lanning, illustrated by Alex Dalton and S.L. Gallant. Titan Books (February 2009); 48 pages; ISBN 9781848562776
This sturdy paperback book features the movie plot in graphic novel form. The story begins as Susan Murphy prepares for her wedding day and accidently gets hit by a meteor that turns her into the five stories tall, 23,632 pound monstrosity, Ginormica. Imprisoned in a secret government facility, she befriends other "monsters" named Dr. Cockroach, B.O.B., Link and Insectosaurus. When an evil alien named Gallaxhar attacks earth, she and her new friends are released to save the world. The graphic novel slant works well for telling this action-packed adventure story full of terms like KA-ZZZAPP and THRAABOOOOM! I enjoyed the humor involved, too, from the President attempting to make first contact with the aliens by jiving on an electric keyboard to the ridiculous kitty decor in the prison cell. With a female super-hero the book should appeal to both girls and boys.

Monsters Vs. Aliens: The M Files by Tom DeFalco and Robin Etherington with art by Fabio Laguna and Alex Dalton. Titan Books (February 2009); 48 pages; ISBN 9781848562813
This prequel to the movie adaptation features two new and original Monsters vs. Aliens tales: "The 'M' Files" and "Brain Pain." "The 'M' Files" delves into the background and origins of the monsters featured in the movie. Readers learn of Link, an ancient Fish Man set free from his ice encasement; B.O.B., the result of a tomato experiment gone bad; Insectosaurus, tiny grub turned enormous from radiation exposure; and Dr. Cockroach, a brilliant scientist who accidently transformed himself into a cockroach-man. In the wordy "Brain Pain," B.O.B. the monster lacks a brain so through experimentation Dr. Cockroach makes him one. The smart B.O.B. renames himself "Bartholomew Organo Benedict" and pontificates using large words and phrases. Unfortunately, due to some miscalculations, the B.O.B. brain experiment doesn't go as expected. Contrary to the product description, Susan Murphy (a.k.a Ginormica) does NOT make an appearance anywhere in this book.
