There are many, many blog posts dedicated to the Grey/Gray topic. I like this one by Bernie Zimmerman. His post pops up first in a Google search for "Gray Grey Spelling." http://www.bernzilla.com/item.php?id=232. Here's a Wikipedia post: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray_(color).
Guess it comes down to whether or not you prefer using British or American English. Personally, I like grey, which it the British form. The reason? Well, the grey spelling seems to fit the word better, a kind of blah, dreary color. For some reason, the spelling gray just seems too happy to me, maybe because it contains the letter "a" like the word happy. Which way do you prefer?

I like "gray" but that's only because I'm already used to it. And "grey" really DOES look like it would represent a "blah" color! Whoah.. never thought of it that way
I always thought it was gray but who really knows I am not the best speller
